The parade was led off by the Atascadero Police Department and a classic police cruiser. “I wouldn’t call myself a car enthusiast but I’m looking forward to seeing all the cars from the 50s and 60s,” Erwin added. “It’s really cool to see so many people come together to celebrate something that they love,” said Atascadero resident Sam Erwin. A huge thank you goes out to past presidents Duane Powell and Larry Wilson, past vice president Dave Evers and a wonderful assortment of newspaper articles from the past memorialized by Les, Duane, and other club members. This assistance was extremely helpful to current president Roy Barba in providing information for this article. More recently, all of the club’s profits have been directed to local charities.

That will be followed by the 7th Annual Dancing in the Streets from 5 p.m. Local bands will perform throughout the downtown area with food trucks and beer, wine, cider, and spirits available for purchase. This year there were at least 400 cars ranging from classically restored hotrods from the 1950’s and 1960’s to today’s sports cars, pickup trucks, and lowriders. We watched as the owners took pride showing off their cars to the spectators that lined the streets, and we cheered every time a special car, flashy lights, or funky horn drove by.

Last year they donated a total of $10,000 to 10 local charities, $1,000 to each. While the first years of Cruse Nite were limited to vehicles driving down El Camino Real, the route has been extended to include a loop around Entrada Avenue and Traffic Way. The first Atascadero Cruise Nite was in August 1993 and conceived by the club. It wasn’t long before the City of Atascadero took over the responsibilities of organizing the Hot El Camino Cruise Nite, which they still do.

Community Entertainment featuring Motions Academy of Dance! (stay tuned as this list grows!)
The classic cruise night kicked off a weekend full of classic cars, food and fun in the City of Atascadero. Six years ago, Atascadero added Dancing in the Streets to make sure that the party continued through the weekend. Not only were there local bands playing on three stages, but community entertainment was a part of the evening as well. A member from AHS’s Advanced Choir sang the national anthem, the cheer team from AHS also performed, and there was a performance by Motions Academy of Dance. A cruise night full of classic cars came roaring back to life in Atascadero on Friday evening. They have recently scheduled a “car show” in the Sunken Gardens Park for the citizens to see up close and personal.

Two hundred and fourteen classic cars were on display at the Atascadero Lake Park, and attendees enjoyed 20 merchandise, food, and drink vendors while there. In addition, the downtown merchants and restaurants will be open providing your favorite food and drink and open to serve hungry guests. The first night kicked off Friday, August 16 with the largest cruise night in San Luis Obispo County, followed by a car show on Saturday, August 17, and dancing, live music, and food Saturday night. The festivities continue on Saturday with the 32nd Annual Mid State Cruizers Car Show from 10 a.m.
Last year a total of 503 cars participated and this year a City representative told me they had to set a cap at 500 max cruisers. Music was provided by Burning James & the All-Stars, Dante Marsh and the Vibesetters, The Counterfeit Kings, and Steppin’ Out. And there were 20 food and adult beverage vendors to choose from while the community danced the night away.
Crowds lined El Camino for a glimpse of classic cars of all shapes and sizes. Everyone’s waving across the street at each other to their neighbors, to their friends and family,” said Terrie Banish, public information officer for the City of Atascadero. On Saturday the Hot El Camino Nights festivities continued with the 30th Annual Mid State Cruizers Car Show. The car show allowed the community to see some of the great cars from Cruise Nite up close and personal, and a chance to talk to the owners about their pride and joy. Getting a good view for the Cruise Nite was not difficult, but parking was more challenging (we also got there five minutes before the event started, so…). We ended up parking two blocks north of the Police Station in Atascadero, so it was a bit of a hike back and forth to the car.
US 101 northbound on and off ramps at Highway 41/El Camino Real will be closed. Designated pedestrian crossings for the event will be at Huckleberry’s and East Mall. ATASCADERO, Calif. – Cruisin' Weekend shifts into full gear for its annual event. In preparation, the City of Atascadero announces road closures and rules for the weekend. Another effort the club took part in was lighting in Atascadero Lake Park. In 1997 the Mid State Cruizers donated $3,500 to fund the first light post installed in the park, and there’s even a plaque on lamp #1 honoring the club’s support to the community.
The Mid State Cruizers and the City of Atascadero have had a wonderful relationship that makes Cruisin’ Weekend such a massive success. The City’s Deputy City Manager, Terrie Banish, has been especially instrumental in making things work so smoothly. To know the history of Cruise Nite is only possible if one knows the history of the Mid State Cruizers. The club was chartered in 1989 when a group of automotive enthusiasts, united with the common purpose of appreciating and preserving classic vehicles, got together.
