In the Eighth Season of the show, Randy leaves for Costa Rica , reappearing in only one episode when he came back for Christmas. On that occasion, Randy felt that so much had changed in his absence that he no longer fit in with the family, although confiding in Wilson aided his feelings. While Tim has a very good relationship with his wife, he is quick to admit defeat in any conflict they become engaged in.

Tim hosts a home improvement show called Tool Time with his co-host and friend, Al Borland. While Al is his co-host, Al constantly must remind Tim of safety regulations and practices. Tool Time
We usually saw him over the top of the fence, but in later seasons the show would get more creative in the way they obscured his face for the running joke. Beginning in season three, Heidi Keppert took over the role of the "Tool Time Girl" from Lisa . Like her predecessor, Heidi's job was to introduce the show-within-a-show and assist Tim and Al by bringing them tools. Unlike Lisa, more of Heidi's life was explored in the series, including her marital problems and the crush Tim's son Brad developed on her.
Before being cast as Brad in Home Improvement, Zachery had already made a career out of starring in commercials. While his acting success hit an all-time high on Home Improvement, he did pop up on a slew of beloved shows as he grew older. The now 66-year-old actress went on to star as Dr. Andy Campbell on Lifetime show Strong Medicine, and also briefly appeared on The West Wing. She also took part in multiple TV movies and took her talents from the screen to the stage and made appearances on Broadway. Following his role on Home Improvement, actor Taran Noah Smith essentially quit Hollywood for good. After a difficult estrangement over his trust fund and his 2001 marriage to the much-older Heidi van Pelt , Smith reconciled with his parents.

His usual greetings are "Well, hi-dee-ho ..." or "Hi ho, there neighbor" or "good neighbor" when greeting Tim, "neighborette" when greeting Jill, and "Taylor lad" when greeting the Taylor boys. Mark's relationship with Brad and Randy was often adversarial, especially in early seasons because he was often the butt of their jokes, pranks and teasing. While Mark never truly bonded with Randy, in the final season Mark and Brad grew very close as the result of the dynamic of their relationship changing when Randy left for Costa Rica. He does however mend his relationships with them after learning the error of his ways. Unlike Tim and Brad, Randy is not good with his hands and does not enjoy working on crafts or the Hot Rod.

After "Home Improvement," Richardson turned to stage acting and starred in Christmas movies. Allen played the lead part for all eight seasons and earned an Emmy nomination in 1993 for best lead actor in a comedy series. Wilson’s full name was Wilson W. Wilson, he was played by Earl Hindman, who died of lung cancer at 61 years old in 2003.
Beginning in season 2, Home Improvement began each episode with a cold open, which features the show's logo during the teaser. From season 4 until the end of the series in 1999, an anthropomorphic version of the logo was used in different types of animation. The network originally hired Frances Fisherto play Allen's wife in the series, but the test pilot did not go over well.
